A Bronx woman named So Robles, in an attempt to protect her child from the precocious rats in her apartment, slept with her 8-week-old baby in her bed. On Sunday night, she rolled over and suffocated him.
Prior to this, Robles had seen the rats crawl towards her son’s bed, attracted by the scent of milk. Lately, the rat infestation intensified as cold weather forced the rats indoors.
A tearful Robles said, “I should have put him in the crib, I should have. I was so scared - scared of the rats.”
The lovely landlord had nothing but sympathy for the woman. He, also, claimed that he didn’t know about the rat problem.
“That’s news to me. It wasn’t brought to my attention,” said the Landlord, Christopher Hanover, 46. “I heard there was something in the building about a baby today, but I didn’t know what.”
However, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development reported 378 open violations in the 27-unit, five-story building. 20 of those include citations for mice and rodent infestation.
“They would crawl into the crib,” said Migdalia Contreras, 18, who keeps 1-year-old son Kenneth in her own bed. “I told the landlord but it’s like talking to yourself. At night, I’m up fighting with the rats, grabbing them. In the morning they’re right up next to me. I turn over and say, ‘Good morning.’”
