Following the lead of panhandler, Eddie Wise, who obtained a $100,000 settlement for unlawful arrest, six other homeless people have decided to take their complaints to court.
“They violated my rights. Panhandling is not a crime. I’m just asking for a few dollars to feed my family,” said Michael Louis Brown, 48, who is one of six new beggars to sign on to a federal suit.
The panhandlers can justify their lawsuits because the NYPD has repeatedly enforced an anti-mooching law, which has been off the books since 1992.
Wise’s settlement, however, could be an anomaly since her was arrested more than 24 times.
“We do not believe that any of the plaintiffs have a situation that would entitle them to a recovery like the one Mr. Wise received,” said Rachel Seligman, a senior lawyer with the city Law Department.
However, More than 7,000 panhandlers statewide, who have been arrested or ticketed since 1992, according the Bronx Defenders, stand to make a profit off this injustice.
We probably shouldn’t be writing about this because, I am sure, about 75% of those homeless people read metadish. Once they read this, the courts are going to be flooded with lawsuits.
And why not? If they receive as much as Wise, they can afford to take a year off.
Hey, city, can you spare me 100G? [New York Daily News]
