NYC to Parents: Here, Call Someone Who Cares

Politics of diversion are hilarious.

Following an incoherent, mid-year restructuring of school bus routes that resulted in a record number of complaints from parents of New York City school children, City Hall has appointed a parent’s czar to represent the concerns and interests of parents at the Department of Education.

The appointment of Martine Guerrier, an outspoken Brooklyn mother, to the newly created position is supposedly intended to remedy complaints that parental concerns are not taken into consideration by the DOE.

Actually, the appointment will do something much better for City Hall and the DOE: it will give parents someone else to air their many disregarded grievances to. Now, instead of having hundreds of parents lining up to complain about policy changes and reorganizations, the Department of Education will instead just have one person not to listen to.

Mayor Bloomberg said about Guerrier’s appointment to oversee parent coordinators with each of the city’s 1,400 school’s, “Parent coordinators are a very successful element of our Children First reforms and they are the first point of contact between families and schools.” In other words, parents, why don’t you call the person we hired to care?

Now, that’s what I call streamlining an ineffective bureaucracy!
