Bridging the gender gap is apparently just a humorous metaphor to New York’s Department of Transportation.
A lawsuit filed by the U.S. Attorney in federal court accuses the DOT of discriminating against female bridge painters, having never hired one despite receiving applications from qualified women. Reuters is reporting that since 1997, the city has had 13 openings in its 100-member bridge-painting staff (which maintains the 770 bridges operated by the DOT) , and though there were three qualified women among the 56 applicants in that time, all 13 positions were awarded to men.
Men can’t match socks and pants, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge looks like it was painted by a color-blind monkey. I guess it’s true what they say: high-suspension beam painting is just one big boys club.
