Mel Gibson has proven to the world that he is a very sensitive director who takes great pains to never alienate or marginilize entire religions or races. Just look at how carefully he handled the topic of Judaism.
Apparently, there are some people, namely the Mayan community of Cal State University at Northridge in the San Fernando Valley where he spoke last night, who don’t agree. During a discussion of his new movie, “Apocalypto,” Alicia Estrada, an Assistant Professor at the University, challenged whether he had actually read about the Mayan culture before making the movie.
According to TMZ:
Estrada persisted, stating that representations in the movie that the Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies and had bloodthirsty tendencies were both wrong and racist
The Mayan group then proceeded to protest and get kicked out of the talk.
As the group was escorted out, Mel Gibson shouted, “make your own movie.”
Maybe they will, Mel. They probably don’t need to research their subject at all, either. It could be a gripping tale about a troubled, racist alcoholic who beats his wife, has sex with his sister and loves guns.
