New York is all about having babies right now; it’s like its “thing.” Since 2000, human’s who are living in New York and are under the age of five has increased by 32 percent. Let’s put this in perspective, that means for every 20 people standing in line New York waiting to use the bathroom at Starbucks, there is one kid about to pee his pants.
Half of this growth has been attributed to white people who have a lot of money. That means there are 35,000 kids in NYC who are growing up in households where the median income, according to a 2005 census, is $284, 208
This number is drastically different from the amount earned every year by non-white groups. The census determined that median income for Asians was $66,213, for blacks was $31,171 and for Latinos was $26,467.
Researchers have determined that people just aren’t moving to the suburbs to start their families anymore because it’s really boring out there.
“Clearly having kids in Manhattan is a luxury for only those that can truly afford it,” demographer William H Frey said. “Others with small toddlers avoided or left Manhattan in favor of more affordable cities or suburban communities.”
