amd_imusb.jpgAfter taking huge hits yesterday with advertisers pulling out faster than K-Fed ever did, MSNBC has decided not to air the TV simulcast of Imus’ show anymore. P&G, Sprint, Staples and GM were just a few of the 16 major sponsors yesterday who announced they were pulling their ads from the Imus show.

But, Steve Capus, the president of NBC news said it wasn’t just he corporate pressure that persuaded him canceling the Imus simulcast was the right thing to do. “I’ve received hundreds and thousands of e-mails both internally and externally with very strong views,” he said. “The decision was made after listening to the people who work for NBC News.”

“This is about doing what is right,” he said. “Look, I’m one of the people who considered himself an Imus fan. I listened to him every morning, and I think very highly of him. I really do. But I needed to make this call.”

Capus claims he wasn’t influenced by the droves of advertisers pulling their spots and getting as far away from Imus as possible. Umm, yeah, we’re not buying that.

Anyone taking bets on how long before CBS drops him from the radio show?

The decision to discontinue support and air time to Imus was the right one.
Even if he was a good guy saying a bad thing the thing was so egregious and hurtful to so many promising young women that there has to be real and serious consequences. I have never seen or heard the show but I would have boycotted products and advertisers because of the serious racist and sexist nature of the comments made on this radio/TV talk segment. Clearly he also has a history of making racist and sexist remarks. The FCC and the Corporation which broadcasts must take the responsibility to set limits and parameters for their news and entertainment providers who use racist, hateful and extremely provocative speech which clearly will injure others.
I hope the team members take him to court and sue the hate right out of him. Their lives and school work and athletic achievement will now always be tarnished by this mans disgusting comments and the ensuing media blitz that has followed. The sad thing is he will probably be picked up by some other show.
Hopefully Americans wont forget and wont support this kind of bizarre “humor” format.
The need for white and black men and women to “get” the fact that there is no humor in name calling of blacks or women or other minorities and that using language in this way in a public format is insightful, mean spirited and contrary to everything we stand for in this country. People have the right and freedom to speak but others have the right to maintain their human dignity, peace and quiet and basic human respect. Freedom of speech should never out trump basic human rights and dignities.

Along with the removal from the air this man needs serious consciousness raising education. Maybe he should be the water boy for the team next season…or maybe he should take the next two years of his life and go to Katrina stricken areas and work hand in hand with the people of those communities. This will allow him to really build a one on one experience, hopefully with an understanding of the lives and struggles of people of color as people, not just recipients of some money or cause he liberally supported.
Raising money for good causes exhibits that he has good connections to people and power but it is not the same as having a personal experience with adults who have no power and no connections; people whom he feels so free to mock and degrade.

This Don Imus thing is a perfect case of over-reaction. Sure his comment was uncalled for, but a lot of his comments are, that is what he does. The network sure seemed satisfied with him up to now. I have watched the show for years and will miss him in the mornings, MSNBC will be off limits to me now and so will his sponsors, who bowed out so easily!

Congratulations to the bastions of free speech. A bunch of racist, hate mongering activist have successfully pulled the the plug on free speech. Their fake rage and demands for Imus firing have hurt more people than his ridiculous statement ever did. So MSNBC drops his simulcast as he about to raise money for children with cancer and SIDS, which effects everyone of every race. Way to go. Did everyone who demanded his firing and boycotting of sponsors personally know any of the players?
The cowards who run these networks and companies who dropped sponsorship of Imus shows so quickly without regard to anything else, should be boycotted and fired. Common sense has taken a back seat to extremists. We have become a society of weak minded sheep. This from a network that was pushing the Anna Nicole Smith death watch down our proverbial throats. We are more concerned about who fathered her child, than a war being fought. I am so ashamed.
