Kurt VonnegutKurt Vonnegut, one of our favorite authors of all time has died at the age 84 after suffering brain injuries from a fall several weeks ago.

Slaughterhouse-Five, Cats Cradle and Hocus Pocus o name a few. If you have never read a Vonnegut book do yourself a favor and go out and get yourself a copy today.

Vonnegut had an unbelievably rough life, spent the first part of his young, adult life as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany. While being held captive he witnessed firsthand the fire bombing of Dresden, Germany in 1945.

Thousands of civilians were killed in the raids, many of them burned to death or asphyxiated. “The firebombing of Dresden,” Mr. Vonnegut wrote, “was a work of art.” It was, he added, “a tower of smoke and flame to commemorate the rage and heartbreak of so many who had had their lives warped or ruined by the indescribable greed and vanity and cruelty of Germany.”

Vonnegut wrote of those experiences as a prisoner of war in one of his most popular books, Slaughterhouse-Five. The dichotomy of Vonnegut’s life was apparent.  He, as so many great writers, was able to seemingly effortlessly put pen to paper and write from his heart and his experience.  A truly rare gift.

To Mr. Vonnegut, the only possible redemption for the madness and apparent meaninglessness of existence was human kindness. The title character in his 1965 novel, “God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater,” summed up his philosophy:

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’ ”

R.I.P. Mr. Vonnegut.
