A group of about a dozen high school students from the progressive UWS Beacon School, along with their history teacher traveled to Cuba over spring break and are now facing fines of up to $65,000 apiece. The students were briefly detained in the Bahamas by U.S. customs officials on their way back from Cuba.
Apparently the U.S. doesn’t want to flaunt its freedom all up in Cuba’s face so it’s essential to limit our freedom to travel there otherwise those freedomless commies might see what they’re missing and want in on it.
According to the State Dept. the only people allowed to travel to Cuba are full-time professionals conducting academic research or attending a conference. Or undergrad or grad students participating in an educational program lasting at least 10 weeks as part of a course offered at a U.S. collegiate institution.
Suck high school kids. If you want to travel to Cuba you’re just going to have to get a job. Or go to college and then study there for 10 weeks. But absolutely no spring breaking there.
Although, according to their website, in 2004-2005 the school sponsored a semester long trip to Cuba with complimentary classes, the school’s principal, Ruth Lacey, insists that she did not approve this trip. When asked whether or not she had approved the previous trips Lacey responded, “At the time, I think the climate in the country was different.”
