Charlie DeathAny episode that starts with a gruesome death is going to be a decent episode.  Any episode that focuses on Desmond is going to be a very decent episode.  Any episode that features Jin telling a Korean campfire story with a flashlight shining in his face, Charlie and Hurley arguing about whether the Flash is faster than Superman, and yet another gratuitous shot of Kate in her underwear is going to be a great episode.

And kudos to Kate for almost making it through the whole episode without crying.  At least when she was crying we couldn’t really see it since she was so busy trying to huckleberry Sawyer.

Summary: We start with Desmond, Jin, Hurley and Charlie tramping through the jungle.  Charlie gets killed by what appears to be one of Rousseau’s boobie traps.  Then we zoom back in time and discover this was one of Desmond’s psychic flashes.  He gathers Hurley, Jin and Charlie and tells them they have to go on a hike because someone is coming to the island and they all have to be there.  He leaves out the part about Charlie dying.  Also, since no one speaks Korean, Jin apparently has no idea what’s going on and just thinks they’re going camping.

Nice to know Sun is willing to let Jin go camping with the guys on this island of death.  Maybe she’ll get lucky and nobody will try to kidnap her while he’s gone.  She’s one of the good ones.

Back at the Lostie camp, Kate gets all jealous of Jack making time with Juliet and decides to rape Sawyer.  Later, obviously suffering from some sort of post-traumatic stress syndrome, Sawyer tells her all she had to do was ask.

Meanwhile, Desmond and the B-Team are sitting around a campfire on a beach when they hear a helicopter crash into the ocean and see a flashing red light (a parachute) falling from the sky.  Desmond leads them towards it and Charlie’s impending death.  At the last second Desmond comes to his senses and saves Charlie’s life, but at what cost?  The whole time its been obvious that Desmond believes that the person coming to the island is his ex-girlfriend Penelope.  Imagine his surprise when it turns out to be: Lost Parachuter

That’s right, its the kid from Temple of Doom who collapsed in Dr’ Jones’s arms after escaping from the evil clutches of Amrish Puri and his army of call center workers.

Roll credits.

So was it supposed to be Penny who landed on the island but Desmond messed it up by saving Charlie’s life?  Or did Desmond just want to believe it was Penny?  Whoever it is they were travelling with a copy of Catch-22 that had a picture of Desmond and Penelope in it so he/she/it is obviously somehow connected to Penelope and those Portugese guys we saw in last season’s finale.  Perhaps this week’s flashback will provide some clues…

Flashback summary: we see that Desmond was once a monk.  He apparently became a monk after nearly getting married to some chick who isn’t Penelope (trust me, I don’t care how nice she was, Desmond dodged a bullet on that one).  The monks make expensive wine and Desmond gets drunk off of it so they kick his boozing ass out, although they tell him the reason he is getting the boot is because he has a purpose that has nothing to do with being a monk, but honestly, its because he drank two bottles of their best shit.

At the end, before he leaves forever, Desmond helps carry some boxes of the wine out to someone’s car.  Who is that someone?  Why, its Penelope!  Yay!  And thus the magic begins.

By the way, Brother Campbell and the old woman from the last Desmond episode, who told Desmond he couldn’t change the future, are apparently bestest buddies:

Brother Campbell & Ms Hawking

Take a close look at that picture and you will see just about the crappiest photoshopping job ever.  EVER.  I think the camera cut away from the picture less because the producers wanted to throw it in as an Easter Egg and more because they were extremely embarrassed of the prop department’s horribly inept cut and paste.  What the heck did they use to put this photo together anyway?  Couldn’t they have at least had Brother Campbell pose in such a way that they appear to be in the same universe?  She looks like she’s on vacation and he looks like he’s having his mug shot taken.

So, did Charlie die this week?  Yes and no.  So I guess the answer is actually no.  Since we know the last episode before the season finale is going to focus on Charlie, I wouldn’t expect him to die before then.  I still think he’s going to survive, but you know if he does, someone else is history.

Who was MIA?  Locke, Ben, the others, Sayid, smokey cloud of death and Sun.

Sawyerism of the Week: (while kicking Jack’s ass at ping pong) “If we don’t play every 108 minutes, the island blows up.”

What’s up next week?  Its a Sun and Jin episode so we may finally learn who the father of Sun’s baby is and my guess is it ain’t gonna be Jin.

Who’s on deck:
3.19 John Locke
3.20 Benjamin Linus
3.21 Charlie Pace
3.22-23 Jack Shephard

Score: 8 out of 10.
