Not only is the Living Theatre showing off its new digs, but it’s very first production in its new space is The Brig, written by Ken Brown, the Pulitzer prize winning nominated playwright, who happens to be a very close friend of ours.
If you don’t know, Ken, along with the Living Theatre were like theatre gods in the 60’s man. The Brig not only got Mr. Brown a Pulitzer nominated for a Pulitzer but it won the Living Theatre their third Obie award. When theatre was a true art form, a craft and the people who honed that craft lived like effing rockstars and rubbed elbows with some of the most talented, enlightened people of the 20th century.
It’s fitting that the theatre who made its name by not playing safe would open its new space with The Brig, an uncompromising exposé of the brutality of military discipline in a Marine barracks, since the original production in 1963 was shut down when the IRS closed their 14th Street location for nonpayment of taxes.
The big event is the return of the LIVING THEATER, the celebrated avant-garde company founded by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. This unabashedly radical troupe hit its stride in the early 1960s, winning its third Obie award in 1963 for “The Brig,” the autobiographical play by Kenneth H. Brown about the brutality of a Marine Corps prison. Itinerant for many years, the company now has a permanent space to play in, and Ms. Malina, still very much in charge (Mr. Beck died in 1985), will direct the new production.–NYT

You can buy your tickets here, unfortunately tonight is sold out so unless you already got one or you know somebody who knows somebody you’re out of luck for opening night.
Seriously, if you’re in the mood for some great, gritty theatre get your ass to see this show. You can thank us later.

Please correct or delete: I did not win a Pulitzer Prize. I was nominated for one, but the award was not given that year.
Best,
Ken Brown
