Peter Kalikow has decided to step down from his post as M.T.A. chairman in order to spend more time driving Ferraris and kicking homeless people.
Mr. Kalikow, who lives in an exclusive Fifth Avenue building and often uses a chauffeur, never pretended to come from the ordinary masses. In a May 2005 article, my colleague Robin Finn noted his fondness for Ferraris and his unsuccessful foray into newspaper ownership. (He owned The New York Post for several years, until 1993.)
When Gov. Eliot Spitzer took office in January he reorganized the power structure of the M.T.A. and named Elliot G. Sander to be the authority’s chief executive and executive director, its top salaried, day-to-day manager. Apparently Kalikow couldn’t find a Ferrari expensive enough to live with that slap to his manhood.
The Empire Zone reports that Kalikow left some parting words of advice for his successor. “Raise fares only as a last resort, but do not leave the fares artificially low, which will cause disinvestment in our system.” Asked if a fare increase next year was needed, he said, “One of the nice things about leaving the job — and there aren’t many — is that that’s now Lee’s problem.”
