Jason Giambi went on record yesterday saying that he did indeed use steroids and also apologized for his decision.
“I was wrong for doing that stuff,” Giambi admitted to USA Today before yesterday’s Yankees White Sox game. “What we should have done a long time ago was stand up - players, ownership, everybody - and said: ‘We made a mistake.’”
“We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. … Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it.”
“Unfortunately, (the rumors) are going to be a part of it. But that’s OK. I’m probably tested more than anybody else. I’m not hiding anything. That stuff didn’t help me hit home runs. I don’t care what people say, nothing is going to give you that gift of hitting a baseball.”
When asked why he did it his only response was, “Maybe one day I’ll talk about it, but not now.”
As far as I’m concerned Giambi has been the only guys that has been stand up about this situation the entire time. He was the only one who didn’t flat out lie to the grand jury about using steroids and HGH during the BALCO scandal. He even offered an apology to fans before the 2005 season, stopping short of an admission.
During all of this Giambi has been the only player who seems to have any sort of conscious about his decision to, in essence, break the rules. In the midst of a scandal that has dragged out for years, he has been the only player to take responsibility for his actions. I for one think he should be applauded for being honest and admitting his mistake. That’s not always an easy thing to do, especially when there is so much scrutiny leveled at you on a daily basis.
