Unlike the literally green VW Bug taxis in Mexico City which we were warned vehemently against ever taking or risk being robbed at knife point, NYC cabs are going green for the environment.
I just got off the phone with the Mayor’s office and confirmed that Mayor Bloomberg is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today to announce his five-year-plan to convert the entire NYC taxi fleet to gas-electric hybrids.
The plan will see 20% of the fleet converted each year until 2012 when the entire fleet of approximately 13,000 cabs will be totally hybrid.
In October of 2005 NYC ordered 500 hybrid buses to add to its fleet. A month later in November of 2005 six hybrid taxis hit the streets of Manhattan as a test to see how they would perform. Less than two years later the entire fleet is beginning its conversion to 100% hybridity.
Once again Bloomberg puts NYC at the forefront of environmentally aware urban cities. Of course Giuliani did shut down the peep shows and questionable art exhibits which of course allowed all of us to breath easier, the environment be damned.
