On the heels of last Friday’s news of an off-duty cop shooting and killing an unarmed man who he believed was trying to flee the scene of an accident Police Commish Ray Kelly has broken ranks with Bloomberg and says that City Hall’s tactics in contract talks aren’t working.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly warned yesterday that the NYPD is in an unprecedented labor crisis because low pay for rookies has let the department recruit only about a quarter of the trainees it had wanted for the next academy class.
Kelly, testifying at a City Council budget hearing, revealed that the department has been able to find recruits for only one-quarter of the 2,800 openings it has available in the Police Academy class that starts in July.
He said he expects to hire just 700 to 800 new cops, and pegged the starting pay of $25,100, which maxes out at just under $60,000 after several years on the force, for the shortfall.
“I think this is the most critical labor issue facing the city,” Kelly declared.
It’s a toss up who stands to benefit more from this lack of recruitment, criminals or unarmed people in general.
It’s also a toss up as to where we really stand on the issue. Being a cop is an incredibly hard job and any job that puts you in a position to possibly lose your life while protecting the public from real criminals should definitely come with some pretty fucking decent salary benefits. Maybe better salaries will attract a larger and more diverse pool of candidates that can be more effectively trained to chill on using deadly force.
