“Don’t block the box” signs have been around NYC for a while but they seem to be about as effective as the no honking signs that are plastered everywhere. The problem with the signs is not only are they as useful as teats on a bull (thanks Dad) but they’re nearly impossible to enforce under the current law.
Under the current laws only a limited number of agents have the authority to issue a citation and can only do so by physically stopping the car and writing out a ticket. All of which sort of defeats the purpose since that only makes the congestion worse. Mayor Bloomberg wants to change all that.
Bloomberg said yesterday he’ll push to change state law so the city’s 2,800 traffic agents can write a ticket for blocking an intersection just by entering the offender’s license plate into a handheld device.
The mayor also wants approval from the state Legislature to allow red-light cameras to capture plates of gridlockers - and boost fines from $90 to $115.
“We need relief,” said Councilman Dan Garodnick (D-Manhattan). “Drivers who block intersections and turn our boulevards into parking lots should get parking tickets.”
Bloomberg dismissed fears of a “ticket blitz” at the Times Square news conference where he announced his plan.
“All you have to do is obey the law and there isn’t going to be any ticket, and we’ll all benefit from it,” he said.
“My sympathies are with the people who can’t avoid the congestion, who can’t avoid breathing the air, not with the people who deliberately break the law and get a ticket,” said Bloomberg.
Bloomberg plans to hire 117 new traffic agents to help with intersection gridlock. I personally think he should take the law one step further to include the easy ticket plan for honking as well.
While blocking the box is quite annoying and sucks for congestion, it doesn’t have nearly the same ability to make me want to bash in someone’s windshield for laying on their horn .0005 seconds after a light has turned green.
