A report released yesterday by the city Independent Budget Office says that unless the city and state start kicking in more money bus and subway fares in NYC could be as much as $3 by 2010.
“If we don’t get financial help soon, transit riders will face whopping fare hikes,” said Gene Russianoff of the rider advocacy group.
Russianoff urged Gov. Spitzer to get behind Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed congestion tax for people driving into Manhattan. The tax could generate billions of dollars of revenue for mass transit.
Even if MTA revenues - including tax-generated funds and automobile tolls - go up by 20%, the Independent Budget Office concludes that subway and bus fares would still have to rise to $2.40 from $2.
The guy in the picture is all like, “hell yeah I’d like to buy a new jacket but $3 for a subway ride? WTF? The product I use in my hair costs like 60 bucks a week.”
