Bloomberg isn’t messing around about making NYC the leader in green technology. Hopefully this new solar commitment will not only help make the city more environmentally friendly, it will allow ConEd to not blackout the city everytime the thermostat goes above 95.
The city will officially solicit bids this fall from private solar developers to build, own, operate and maintain solar panels on 20 to 50 city-owned buildings as part of a pilot program aimed at promoting the use of solar energy, Bloomberg said yesterday.
The city will agree to buy electricity from the winning bidder over a 20-year period, officials said. A year after the pilot program starts, the city will determine whether the program should be expanded.
“We have plenty of space available on our roofs for solar panels, and solar energy is most available when the city needs it most - on hot, sunny days,” Bloomberg said.
The city will also offer tax rebates to the private sector as an incentive to go solar. The rebates would be equal to 35% of the cost of solar installation. Not to mention the money you save after installation.
