Been trying to plan that perfect summer vacation but just can’t seem to afford the airline prices to Europe? Too lazy to get a passport? Hate the French but are only mildly offended by people from The Bronx? Then do we have the perfect solution for you!
A series of television commercials promoting the borough of 1.3 million will be on the airwaves starting June 25. The 30-second spots, the first television advertisements the Bronx has used to sell itself, are part of a marketing campaign called “We’re Talking the Bronx,” starring Adolfo Carrión Jr., the borough president.
In the nine commercials, Mr. Carrión boasts of the borough’s Zagat-rated restaurants (there are 25 of them, he says), its booming residential and commercial development, its physical beauty and its many attractions, like the Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium. The $200,000 campaign was paid for by several Bronx institutions and companies featured
25 Zagat-rated restaurants!?! Wow! I’d only have to pass 2,098 other Zagat-rated restaurants on my way there, sign me up!
Also, if you’re going to spend $200,000 on an ad campaign you might want to mention something besides the only two reasons people come to the Bronx.
The commercials which, will be aired in the New York region, seem to focus on the obvious.
I’m pretty sure that most people in the “New York region” already know the Bronx Zoo is in the Bronx and that the Yankees are called the “Bronx Bombers” because of their locale.
Maybe you could have thrown in a, “hey, we’re not on fire anymore!” I’m no marketing genius but I have a feeling that would have been very effective angle.
Things you may want to take with you on your fabulous Bronx vacation:
- A sleeping bag: The Bronx has exactly zero major hotels for tourists.
- Spare change: the Bronx had the fourth-highest poverty rate in the nation, trailing three counties on the Texas-Mexico border [NYT]
- A job: The Bronx has the highest unemployment rate in NYC by far.
Man, I should start writing my own travel guide. A whole series of travel books called, What to Take When you Go There. I creative.

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here.Ha yeah…laughed when I saw that this morning too…
The I Love New York campaign has nothing on the Bronx campaign:
Come take pictures of the thousands of criminals leaving the Courthouse!
Come take a stroll along the tree lined Grand Concourse and see how many bodega robberies you can spot!
Come get mugged in Van Cortlandt Park at night!
We talkin bout the Boogie Down Bronx - beeyatch!
btw…there is a lovely motel on Broadway and somewhere in the 250s called the Van Cortlandt Motel…you should check it out sometime, they have “hourly rates” if you need to bring along a “friend”.
