During a layover at JFK Tuesday night, 13 of 18 players of the Haiti junior soccer team pulled an old fashioned, Cold War era, Soviet style defection and slipped away from the team. Haiti is apparently not happy about this fairly public embarrassment.
It’s not exactly clear why the players defected from the team or where they are, although five players had returned to the team by last night.
“It seems that some adults may have been involved. If so, they are going to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Augustin, who declined to give further details.
Yves Jean-Bart, president of the Haitian soccer federation based in the capital Port-au-Prince, issued a stern warning, saying that the youngsters were hurting their futures. He threatened to involve U.S. authorities unless the players immediately return to the team.
However, U.S. authorities have said they are unlikely to get involved until the student’s tourist visas expire which wouldn’t be for another six months.
Jean-Bart in an interview on Haitian-based radio said, “this is extraordinary. We want our players back.” He also claimed to have absolutely no idea why the players would “abandon their team and their homeland”.
Yeah, it’s a real mind bender.
