Mule

“Oh my God, there’s a huge, blazing fire behind me but this sandwich board is in my way, I shall surely perish!”

ticket-writer.jpgThanks to the NYC Environmental Control Board you will never find yourself in this situation. Your tax dollars are hard at work fining small businesses for placing a sandwich board in front for a little advertising.

Mule, a coffee/wine shop in Park Slope was hit with a $100 fine for having a sandwich board on the sidewalk.

As you can see by the measurements, 7′ is apparently subjective. At least to the woman writing the ticket.

Did somebody say something about a quota?  This seems a little knit-picky to us.  Is the city so worried about its revenue stream that it will openly fine small business for sandwich signs in front of their business?

Apparently. More than 7′ and it’s a fire hazard or something.

Ruling a sandwich board a fire hazard sort of reminds me of the Mitch Hedberg line, “”If you are flamable, and have legs, you are never a fire-hazard…”

jesus, this city really makes it impossible for a small business owner to survive. it’s hard enough to just get a restaurant/bar/coffee shop/etc up and running. after people have gone through hoops to get a place open they get to look forward to the city slapping them with bullshit like this. what a joke.
