Chris Benoit, his wife and son were found dead in their Atlanta home yesterday in what is shaping up to be a bizarre murder mystery.
Benoit missed a couple of wrestling shows over the weekend, including a pay-per-view on Sunday night apparently calling in saying he had some sort of “family emergency”.
According to the WWE website at some point during the day on Sunday Benoit appears to have sent some “curious text messages” to friends which were cryptic enough to prompt them to alert Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc. Hering, in turn, spoke with Fayette County sheriffs Monday, and requested that they respond to the Benoit residence to check on him and his family.
Police believe that Chris killed his wife and 7-year-old son at some point over the weekend, then killed himself on Monday.
ESPN.com is reporting that officials are calling this a very bizarre murder-suicide.
“The details, when they come out are going to prove a little bizarre,” said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard, according to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Pope told ABC News “the instruments of death were located on scene,” but would not specify what those instruments are or where in the house the bodies were found. Pope added the department is “not actively searching for any suspects outside of the house.”
Another puzzling aspect of this was that the WWE canceled it’s live Monday night Raw show and aired a tribute to Chris Benoit. The eerie thing is that the tribute seemed to be taped. Does the WWE have pre-recorded tributes taped for all its wrestlers just in case?
