Kobayashi, who has won every Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest since 2001, and become an international celebrity, was finally dethroned today in Coney Island by the Great White Hope, Joey Chestnut.
Chestnut downed a staggering and record breaking 66 hot dogs in just 12 minutes to bring the mustard yellow belt back home to the U.S.A.
Kobayahsi kept pace with Chestnut during the entire competition until the twelfth minute when a few of the hotdogs came back up on him taking his final total down to 63, still shattering his personal best.
Chestnut, who is only 23, has been an up and coming star on the eating contest circuit and had already beaten Kobayashi last month during a preliminary hot dog eating bout.
Kobayashi who was also battling a pulled wisdom tooth and an arthritic jaw had threatened to pull out of the competition but decided against it after taking a lot of slack for not facing Chestnut.
Chestnut finished second to Kobayashi last year.
