Weed is illegal. Guns are legal. And we claim to want to be the moral compass for the rest of the world? Yeah, there’s nothing like reasoning with the Jesus freak gun nuts.
Two NYPD cops were shot last night in Brooklyn when they pulled over an SUV for having the wrong tags.
The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. in the Crown Heights section when the two officers pulled over a black BMW SUV that had license plates belonging to another car.
Kelly said the uniformed officers approached the SUV and someone inside it started shooting, hitting Timoshenko first. Yan returned fire but was hit too, Kelly said.
Officer Russell Timoshenko, 23, was shot in the face and the neck and is described as being in “extremely critical condition.
Police believe that two of the three people inside the stolen SUV fired at the officers. The SUV was recovered a few blocks from the scene and three handguns were also later recovered in the area.

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here.Problem is if you make guns illegal that by and large prevents mostly law abiding people from getting guns.
I doubt those punks got them through normal venues.

No, I think that’s not the problem, that’s the solution. I don’t believe “law abiding citizens” need handguns and automatic weapons.

An argument I’ve often seen put forth was that “ordinary, law-abiding citizens” need guns to make sure they aren’t subjected to a tyrannical government.
But We the People choose our government now. Have for 200+ years. If we have to be so afraid of something we put in place every few years, then aren’t we pretty stupid?
The real truth is most people want guns for the same reason they want to drive Hummers and own iPhones the day they come out. It feeds their egos.

shooting is a sport to many people and many of us that enjoy it couldn’t imagine using our guns on anyone. Plus, start taking away one constitutional right and you are setting a very dangerous precedent.

ok, so because you don’t have a gun or don’t understand it, you automatically judge it with your “egos comment.” those are the very reasons i would never want our rights jeaopordized. The same argument can be used for religion. what if a political group said i dont understand the muslim religion, all terrosists are muslims, therefore lets get rid of allowing them to practice their religion in this country… same argument different issue. there are plenty of logical ways to legislate tougher gun control, taking millions of guns aways from american citizens is unrealistic.

well I have to agree that taking guns away from ignorant, backwards Americans who fail to listen to reason and understand gun related crime statistics because they like to go shootin’ at the range y’all may seem unrealiastic. Gawwwwleeeee.

james, thank you so much for that graph! as you can see, the suicide rate with guns is high in many countries even without guns! i think this is a prime example that we need tougher gun control and and even more important issue is the way we take care of the poor and uneducated. those other countries have much better socialized health care and education systems. the issues go much deeper than gun control…

way to completely ignore the overwhelming murder side of the chart. I’m far less concerned about people who choose to off themselves and how they do it than I am about innocent victims who are gunned down with weapons that are unnecessary and could be easily taken off the street.

I am not ignoring the murder chart i am saying it is a symptom of a much larger issue that goes beyond gun control.

Part of what you’d need to know to fully understand that chart is how available guns are in each country. I don’t know for every one but believe guns are not easily gotten in England (where even the cops aren’t armed) while they are readily available in the US.
In the UK 12% of murders are done with a gun. In the US it’s 59%.
Plus, the murder rate in the US is overall 11 times higher (although I’ve no idea whether that is related a cultural mindset that permits easy access to guns).
As for egos, note I didn’t say all people but “most”. In the debate on gun control (which I have been closely involved in at times) the “we enjoy shooting as a sport” argument is always made. But most of the people, including those who enjoy target shooting only, argue against any real, effective, rational limits being made on who can get a gun and how quickly.
I need to pass a test to get a license to drive a car. And I need to renew it periodically, sometimes even having to pass a test again. Why isn’t at least that much required before I’m allowed to own a gun?

Evaluating the chart a bit more it looks like USA is one of the most dangerous places to live
- highest homicide rate
- 2nd highest homicide with gun % (59%, behind Italy’s 75%)
- highest suicide with gun % (59%)
- lowest suicide:homicide ratio (1.6:1)
That last one means that in the US if someone is intentionally killed, it’s far more likely that someone else did it to them than they did it to themselves than in any other country listed. (In Switzerland, for example, it’s murder less than 5% of the time. In the US it’s murder 38% of the time.
