Beckham is being hailed as the savior of Major League Soccer in the U.S. As of now MLS games pull well under a million viewers per game which is about about the same amount of viewers that watch bass fishing tournaments and tractor pulls.
Beckham’s jersey, which is only available online, has already been bought by over 250,000 fans people bandwagoners at $80 a pop. Thanks to my handy built in calculator I know that equals $20 million in revenue. What else do I know? Before this year, the entire MLS league had only made $150 million in merchandising in an entire year.
The bottom line is when this exact same stunt was tried in the 70’s it didn’t work. The pro US soccer league at the time imported Pele and a number of other well known, slightly over the hill soccer players to attract attention to the sport. It did fill stadiums for a while but the problem is it only attracted people who were already interested in soccer, it didn’t grow the fan base. The league went bankrupt like three years later.
So what do you think? Will Beckham have an effect on the MLS and be able to draw more American Fans?
