funny-store.jpgFor the past 50 years if you were in a bind and needed some fake dog poo, fake vomit, a whoopee cushion or a hand buzzer you could take a quick jaunt to Times Square and pick up everything you need at The Funny Store.

On July 29th the Funny Store will shutter their doors one final time. The store, a fixture in Times Square since 1957, is located at 43rd and Eighth and is being replaced by a luxury high-rise.

The complete and total suckification of Times Square is now 99.99999% complete.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Arnold Martin, owner of The Funny Store, who is exactly what you would expect someone who owns a novelty gift shop to be. Mr. Martin was extremely personable and friendly and seems to be pretty jovial all things considered. Martin was dishing out line after line of zingers that made you want to run down to Times Square and pick up a package of their biggest seller, fake poo.

“That’s where we get our motto, ‘here at The Funny Store number two is number one’,” Martin joked. “Hand buzzers and whoopee cushions are our second and third best sellers behind the fake poop.”

Martin also said there are many practical purposed for novelty items. “With the airlines trying to squeeze more and more people into a small space you can pick up some fake vomit, put it in the seat next to you then stretch out and enjoy the flight.”

“You can no longer get a cheap thrill in Times Square,” Martin quirped, “if you want one you better get here before July 29th.”

Mr. Martin said that they have been unable to find a new location for The Funny Store. After July 29th The Funny Store will be no more.
