It was a fight to the death, or should have been, at the Laugh Factory in L.A. last week when Jon Lovitz lost his mind and beat the crap out of the already nutty Andy Dick.
The fight was apparently over their old SNL colleague Phil Hartman. It seems that Lovitz blames Dick for Brynn Hartman, Phil’s wife, snapping and fatally shooting Phil and then herself.
Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, “Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose.” Lovitz told Page Six, “All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole.”
Lovitz and Dick have been at loggerheads since a 1997 Christmas party at Hartman’s house, five months before his troubled wife Brynn flipped out, fatally shooting Hartman, then killing herself. “Andy was doing cocaine, and he gave Brynn some after she had been sober for 10 years. Phil was furious about it - and then five months later he’s dead,” said Lovitz, adding that when he filled in on Hartman’s “Newsradio” sitcom, “I told Andy, ‘I wouldn’t be here now if you hadn’t given Brynn that cocaine.’”
Sometime last year Lovitz claims that a drunken Dick came up to his table, downed his guests’ peach liqueur drink and said, ‘I put the “Phil Hartman hex” on you - you’re the next one to die.’
Apparently last week at the Laugh Factory Lovitz decided he wanted an apology for the Phil Hartman hex quote. Dick denied saying it and told Lovitz that he was pissed because he blamed Dick for Hartman’s death. Then, to teach Dick a lesson about inexplicable sudden violence Lovitz began repeatedly introducing Dick’s head to the bar.
The sad part is that Phil Hartman dead is still funnier than Andy Dick or Jon Lovitz put together. But the funny thing is that if these two ever made up, moved to Vermont and got married it would be the Lovitz-Dick wedding.

Want a neat little picture by your comments? Get one here. You sir are dead wrong. Jon Lovitz is brilliant in every way. It only takes one viewing of the worst movie I have ever seen in my life to understand this: Benchwarmers. Benchwarmers could be the worst movie ever made, however every time Lovitz is on camera I wanted to cry laughing. Combined with his performance in Happiness and every single amazing critic episode Lovitz is one of the most underated commedians on earth.

Lovitz is too funny and was one of the greats of SNL. Even Andy Dick is funny every once in a while, he just happens to be a gigantic ass. I will never understand why a comedian or actor, having once been fairly famous is expected to uphold that level of fame constantly for the rest of their life or be considered a failure. Lovitz seems perfectly happy doing stand-up at The Laugh Factory, he’s not washing cars.
Also, having browsed the blogs over this, the general consensus is that Lovitz deserves some kind of parade in his honor. No one likes Andy Dick.

I love Lovitz! He may not be a major star, but he’s done wonderful supporting work in A League of Her Own, The Wedding Singer, and other movies. And he can sing, too! I’m happy to see Lovitz anytime, although sometimes he gets too gross for my tastes.
I’m not a great fan of Andy Dick, though he does have his good performing moments, such as NewsRadio. I feel sorry for him. Imagine carrying the burden for nine years of being partially responsible for your friend’s death? Andy needs a gigantic dose of forgiveness. At the same time, I almost don’t blame Lovitz for beating him up.

P.S. If Andy could sing, could you imagine Lovitz and Dick starring in a production of The Producers?

I miss Phil Hartman.
He remains an inspiration to voice folks.
His Crosby Stills and Nash Logo is awesome too.
Remember him with Pee Wee as Captain Carl?
Andy Dick will be remembered lovingly by few, if any.

Some people just need the crap knocked out of them.
Andy Dick is one of those people. I was just OK with Lovitz before, but my opinion of him has been elevated multi-fold for sticking up for his friends and for putting Andy Dick in his place.
Good on you John!

Calling Andy Dick a “star” - relevant or not - is an insult to every comic who ever worked the art.
With all respect to the blog owner, I don’t think its fair to marginalize John Lovitz. He is a great talent, and has been the catalyst to some of the funniest comedy ever filmed.
I think John Lovitz did what plenty of people would love to do to the cruel, insensitive A-Holes of the world that seem to crawl from under a rock whenever you are trying to live your life.
Bravo!!!
