Some cabbies aren’t too happy about the new, mandatory high-tech video-and-fare system that must be installed in all taxis by the end of the year.
Cab driver No. 523687, Lea Acey was not pleased with the new addition to her cab saying, “It’s annoying, it makes too much noise.” Note that she was wearing a bluetooth while saying that. Ironic since it’s usually the incessantly babbling cabbies who are “annoying and making too much noise”.
Too much noise? Like without the TV it’s usually such a serene and peaceful cab ride through Manhattan.
Other drivers are worried that the new systems will be able to track their every move. “It’s 24-hour surveillance on workers in an industry where the workers are already so exploited,” said Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the alliance, which represents 8,300 drivers. “It’s intrusive. It’s a complete invasion of privacy.”
That argument isn’t totally without merit considering that the new system is fitted with a GPS system that allows you to follow your route in real time. But is it not fair to say that the “rights” of a few thousand cabbies is less important than my right to watch television (read: advertising) 24 hours a day no matter where I am? Think about it.
The system will play clips from WABC-TV news and eventually some programming from NBC. The hi-tech gadgets are also equipped with a credit card swiper that will allow you to instantly pay for your ride with a debit or credit card.
