car_smoking_ban.jpgThe New York City Council is considering a ban on smoking in a vehicle when any child under 18 is present.  Currently only Arkansas, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, Bangor, Me., and Rockland County, N.Y. have similar legislation.

Queens Democrat, Councilman James F. Gennaro, plans to formally announce the proposal today.  Although it would take months for hearings and votes to actually take place.  If the law is passed fines for breaking it could range from $200 - $2000.

“It is my belief that people’s right to privacy doesn’t extend to force-feeding their children cigarettes within the confines of the car,” said Mr. Gennaro.

In preparation of the passing of this law, NYC is anticipating a rise in road rage incidents by about 300%.
