Last night was the episode that was supposedly going to finally resolve whether Charlie was going to die or not, and although there were some good reveals and the episode itself was wonderfully done, in the end the only thing about Charlie that got resolved was, when facing certain death, he’s got pluck.

Along with earlier episodes this year featuring Desmond and Locke, Greatest Hits featured a creative use of the flashbacks. Instead of getting an entire storyline that related, at least thematically, to the main storyline, we got a handful of scenes showing us what Charlie believed to be the greatest moments of his life.

So basically the entire episode was designed to make you fall in love with Charlie all over again - assuming you ever fell out of love with him or were ever in love with him to begin with - so that when he dies in the end you will bawl your damn eyes out. And I was ready to bawl. But then the sons of bitches who make this show robbed me of my cathartic moment. The end twist was both a relief and slightly infuriating.

Not that Charlie won’t necessarily die in the season finale, its very possible he will, but if Charlie was going to die, this should have been the episode he died in. Nothing they do next week could possible make his death have more impact than it would have last night. So here’s to hoping Charlie lives to die another day. (more…)

As you know, it was a Ben episode, and as we all assumed, it was full of mind bending WTF (hence the new title) moments from beginning to end.

So Jacob is invisible (or not - continue reading) and lives in the house from Evil Dead 2. The island’s “original” inhabitants are a race of immortals who probably came to the island to seek sanctuary from all the head chopping their people are known for. Ben helped the hostiles kill all the people from the Dharma Initiative - including his own worthless father. And Locke has been shot and left for dead (yeah, like he’s really gonna die) in a mass grave.

And on top of all that we get to add another character to the list of people on Lost with SEVERE daddy issues.

Summary powers activate!

Storyline A/Flashback Summary: We start off with a woman (Emily) giving birth in what appears to be the island jungle with only her husband (Roger) to help. She gives birth but something goes wrong and she’s bleeding badly. Roger carries her as she holds the baby through the jungle until they reach… a highway. WTF? A sign in in the background tells us we’re somewhere near Portland, Oregon (where Juliet went to start her new job). A car stops and the driver offers to drive them to the hospital. After Roger puts Emily in the backseat she tells him to name the baby Benjamin and then dies. (more…)

We’re starting to dig the network news men to women ratio. It’s practically the fulfillment of our lifelong fantasy of seeing some network news 2-on-1 action now that we’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that we’ll never see our true fantasy lived out. A Bob Crane type threeway between Dan Rather, Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw.

Gibson, who recently did an interview with New York magazine and was asked about whether or not he would travel as extensively has his colleague Brian Williams reportedly responded by saying,

“That’s because of Katrina; you saw him going down there. Now he’s in Africa. I don’t know why you do that. Why the hell do you go to Africa? It’s certainly an interesting choice. We’ll do travel, when it warrants.”

Of course Charlie claims that the New York Magazine reporter is a “snake” (duh he’s a reporter) but he also claims that he completely misquoted him and Gibson called into a Chicago radio station to defend himself, only to really put his foot in his mouth again.

“This guy, who I will never talk to again from New York magazine who is something of a snake, he took my quote and I think perverted the meaning of it to indicate in some way that I was insensitive to news from one of the five major continents in the world,” he said.

Ok, so there are actually 7 continents in the world and I could see how you could rightfully discount Antarctica as a “major continent” but other than that who are you leaving out of the mix? Australia? Asia? What has Australia ever done to you Charlie Gibson?

For the first time in its 79-year history the National Spelling Bee is going to feel the lights of prime time television with the final rounds airing on ABC this Thursday. ABC is betting that the nation’s insatiable appetite for reality TV shows like American Idol will make this a huge success. I guess the premise is that if you like watching grown ups making complete asses of themselves, then you’ll love watching adolescents stay up past their bedtime and try to spell words you’ve never heard of in front of an audience of millions in an attempt to get ABC some ratings.

While ESPN has been broadcasting the last two-days of the National Spelling Bee finals for the past 12 years, they’ve been doing a pretty shoddy job of it. Finally, ABC has stepped it up a notch and plans to air the spelling bee in high-definition with 5.1-channel surround sound. Let me tell you something, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard a 14-year-old kid spell staphylococci in surround sound.
