Our love/hate relationship with American Apparel ads is pretty well documented. On the one hand they make us feel a little creepy and dirty like by seeing them we’re doing something wrong. But with the other hand we’re usually already whacking it, so it’s a real catch 22 for us.

On the one hand they make us feel a little creepy and dirty like by seeing them we’re doing something wrong. But with the other hand we’re usually already whacking it, so it’s a real catch 22 for us.

Still, with this new “Summer’s Coming” (get it?!) ad they have completely blown the roof off the place. They’ve somehow managed to, in one ad, combine two of my favorite things in life. Hot Asian chicks and crotch shots. Damn, is it time for new summer t-shirts already? I gotta get me some of that.

Thanks to Copyranter who of course is always on the cutting edge of all things advertising.

Listen, we’re as big a fans as of softcore, barely legal advertising that looks like it was taken secretly with a Polaroid to avoid the embarrassment of having to develop it, as the next guy. In the privacy of our own home at least.

It’s bad enough the entire world thinks of us as war happy hate mongers, now we’re being labeled sleazy as well? All thanks to American Apparel’s fetish for semi-erotic sex-ploitation used to market their clothing line, which I for one thank god for. And this label comes from a British paper? This is exactly the kind of freedom of young-girl-erotica-expression this country is founded on. Our forefathers built this country on the idea that barely legal erotica would sell t-shirts, and that (and maybe exorbitant taxation) is the reason we declared our independence from the moral mongering Brits. Your future king married a horse for Christ’s sake!

American Apparel which prides itself on all sweatshop free apparrel and is known for paying it’s employees a decent living wage is now under fire from a country that still refers to itself as the “United Kingdom”? You’re a fucking island, there’s no kingdom left, get over it. Why do the British hate freedom? Sweet, erotic freedom.

For a long while AA was buying up the back cover of the Village Voice and slapping some ads on it that make these pictures look tame. I used to have to make sure to fold the Voice the right way on the subway when i wasn’t reading it for fear of being beaten down as a child pornographer. Unless the train car was empty than I tried to use clues in the picture to figure out where it was actually taken.

The Guardian’s story, which has the byline “Special Report: United States of America; Nice and Sleazy” is trying to out us as pervs to the rest of the world. Come on! I’m not doubting that per-capita the US kills more kittens than the rest of the world combined, but I don’t think we should be giving American Apparel all the credit. The founder of American Apparel is Dov Charney and he’s a fucking Canadian. Blame Canada! Why do you think the drinking age is only 19 in Canada? To convince 19-year old girls to pose for American Apparel ads, that’s why.

I for one, say we annex Canada immediately and adopt their ways as our own.
